Award-winning author Marina (Terwilliger) Yamamoto wrote several of the original Ballerina Birdie stanzas to amuse children before nap while working as a nanny. Further inspiration for the story came from her experience as a children's ballet teacher at West Hawaii Dance Academy and from her cherished lovebird, Auli'i.
