COVID-19 ENCOURAGES SAVANT/AIGNOS

Posted by Daniel Janik on Thursday, March 26, 2020, In : major events
There's plenty of "bad" happening just now in regard to COVID-19 and it's myriad effects on everyone's lives. Yet, for every catastrophe, there's always a silver lining if one can but see it. In our case, we're busy fast-tracking publications to help provide something for quarantined and elective "stay-at-homers," namely the finest in enduring literary works to help entertain the heart and exercise the mind. No mere spoon-fed, mind-numbing movies or videos (I'll admit to an occasional one mys...

THE FIRST DINOSAUR FALLS!

Posted by Daniel S. on Sunday, June 9, 2019, In : Publishing
People in the publishing business have well been aware for several years now that Barnes and Noble (B&N), the last of the huge bookstore chain dinosaurs, has been stumbling. Sometime ago, B&N announced that it was changing its emphasis from books to gifts, while struggling to keep it's 600+ "brick and mortar" bookstores in business. Just recently, Elliott Management Corporation announced (https://www.wsj.com/articles/barnes-noble-to-be-acquired-by-elliott-management-for-6-50-a-share-115599068...

WHERE IS PUBLISHING GOING?

Posted by Daniel S. on Saturday, October 29, 2016, In : Publishing

As the owner of a small but well-established publishing house producing enduring literary works, I'm often asked where I think the publishing industry is ultimately headed. Twenty years ago that question would have been greeted with a quixotic lilt of the head. Today it elicits mainly a puzzled half-frown.

For the past ten or more years, publishing has experienced one major upheaval after another. In the USA, first came the demise of several major bookseller chains, and the gradual repurpos...

RISING TO THE OCCASION

Posted by Daniel S. Janik on Monday, February 17, 2014, In : Publishing
Finding a safe place on today's book publishing battlefield is no easy task; more so, charting a growth position for an uncertain future. For example, bookstores, mainly the large and regional chain stores, which have long been the mainstays of retail book sales, are disappearing at an alarming rate (a la Borders and now Barnes and Noble). The dwindling 3,000 small, independent bookstores are being heavily stressed to stay open as well. But that's nothing new -- it's been coming for a long t...

BOOK PROMOTION FOR AND WITH AUTHORS

Posted by Daniel S. on Monday, April 8, 2013, In : Publishing
Whenever a prospective author asks me, ''What would your publishing house do to promote my book?'' I have to take a minute, breathe deep, and remember that to many, it really means, ''How would you make people buy my book so I can retire a millionaire and never have to write another?''

AUTHORS AND OTHERS

That isn't to say that all potential or seasoned authors think this way, but a growing number of new; young writers seem to. In the world of publishing, there are many writers, and likewise wh...
